I’ve been MIA for a while but hello everyone! Greetings from the road (well, the hotel room in Tucson, Arizona).
I’m one of 5 members chosen to represent Los Angeles in Chevy’s Road Trip Challenge to South by Southwest. 10 teams from the US and Canada are competing in multiple challenges while en route to Austin, Texas for one of the most popular conferences ever. The challenge also included a fundraiser for an amazing non-profit organization called Adopt-a-Classroom. To date, our team has raised over $1,100. Yes, we rock.
It was bittersweet to leave; I haven’t been away from Tej for more than a day since July when we moved in together. Definitely sucked to leave him Long hugs and extra kisses were much needed. Although we were running a few minutes behind, we made it to our first challenge early.
We arrived at Vista Del Monte Elementary School in Palm Springs to Ms. Ruff’s enthusiastic 2nd graders. We helped them out with some St. Patrick’s Day arts & crafts and then recorded them telling us their career aspirations. Epic games of rock, paper, scissors followed; pretty sure I lost 18/20 games.
One of the tricky parts was the fact that our car was gipped on the wifi. We had to stop at a local pub/cafe to submit our challenge and scarf down some food. We got our 2nd challenge hours after the other teams and produced that content after passing the Arizona state lines. We then bummed wifi from a local McDonald’s where Internet was shotty at best.
All the while and the many miles, we finally made it to Tucson where my bestie lives. Unfortunately, there’s not enough time to visit her but maybe I’ll schedule some time.
For more updates on our progress, be sure to check out SXSW Angels; we may not have in-car wifi but we have cell phones!
